Kim, where does the notion of portable benefits for independent contractors come from? I don't recall it being discussed in independent contractor websites. Is there (or was there before the DOGE madness) a plan to create a system of portable benfits? A complete range of benefits? With or without unemployment? Would they be for independent workers only or for employees as well? Would they be part of the drive to privatize Social Security like pensions have been privatized?
Reading over my comment, it seems I might oppose the benefits. But, no, I'm for granting us the full range of benefits just as employees have them, because it would wipe away the benefits excuse that's used so often to justify legislation against us.

Heck, there willl be so many issues to resolve.
This idea has actually been around in D.C. for a while now. Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat who has stood up for independent contractors, has been a big proponent of it: https://markwarnerva.com/on-the-issues/jobs-and-the-economy/
