We discussed the latest attempts at freelance busting, the upcoming election, the free Substack that I launched over the summer, and a book I’m writing about freelance busting.
Here’s an excerpt from the episode, with me speaking first:
We need to fight for everybody. When they come at any industry and restrict your right to choose self-employment, they are coming at us all. They say it's Uber and Lyft, but it doesn't ever stop with Uber and Lyft.
They are trying to do this to all of us, and I think we need to be protecting everybody's freedom to choose how we earn a living.
I just had a conversation last weekend with a relative who is up in Massachusetts who uses independent contractors. And, you know, I was like, I know Massachusetts has got some different stuff going on. And so he was completely unaware of it.
And again, back to our topic a moment ago, I communicate with him, you know, send him articles about the independent contractor issue and all that sort of stuff. But again, it's, you know, totally oblivious to it. And that's not his fault.
They're trying to get at us in so many different ways. You have to almost become a labor and employment policy expert to understand all this craziness.
And the vast majority of people are just trying to figure out how to pay the grocery bills. We don't have time to learn about the National Labor Relations Act and the difference between enterprise bargaining and sectoral bargaining.
I mean, who does that other than a crazy person like me, I suppose?
